Matthew 5:3-6 | The Descent to Delight
Sunday Morning | August 16, 2026 | John C. Majors | Louisville, KY In the second session of the Sermon on the Mount series, Pastor John begins exploring the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:3-6, revealing how true blessing is found through what he calls “the descent to delight.” Jesus teaches that spiritual transformation begins when we come to the end of ourselves, recognizing our poverty of spirit and complete dependence on God. From there, genuine sorrow over sin leads us toward repentance, while humility allows us to discover our true inheritance in Christ. Finally, Jesus teaches that lasting happiness comes not from pursuing happiness itself, but from hungering and thirsting for something greater—God’s righteousness. The Beatitudes turn our understanding of blessing upside down, showing that the path to true joy begins with surrender, humility, and a deep desire for God.

Hungry like a Teenager
Probably a more relevant analogy is the hunger we see in a healthy teenager. It seemed in my high school years that food was almost always at the forefront of my mind. I could never get enough, always asking my lunch-mates “are you going to eat that?” There is a ravishing hunger that hits at that age that seems insatiable. In fact, if a teenager is not hungry, it usually points to something being wrong, because a healthy teen should have a healthy appetite.
Visiting?
Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us at Valley View Church. Our worship services are Sunday Mornings at 11 AM.
Our main entrance is in the back of the building. We have parking spots reserved near the entrance for first time guests. You’ll see them near the overhang that extends out from the entrance.
As you enter the building, we have people ready to greet you and help direct you to the second floor Worship Center. Once you find a seat, you might have a few people introduce themselves to you. We try to be a friendly and welcoming church, but don’t worry, we won’t do anything to put you on the spot during the service.
Our service lasts about an hour and the flow is pretty simple : some singing, some prayer, and some Bible teaching.
After the service, our pastor will personally follow up with you if you have any questions about the church. Fill out a connection card in the seat back in front of you, place it in one of our giving stations, and he will contact you within the week.
Again, we are honored to have you join us. Please reach out to the church office if you have any questions: 502-935-5142
