Hiding God’s Word in Our Hearts

This week we launched a new series in The book of John, if you missed it you’ll want to watch the sermon to get an overview of the book. You might also want to continue to read and meditate on the introduction to the book of John which is John 1:1-18.

Our memory verse for the month is John 1:1, however, you can easily memorize almost the entire introduction (1:1-14) by simply listening to the Scripture memory song that covers all 14 verses. It’s pretty amazing how powerful songs are to help you memorize.

Speaking of memorization, I had a chance to sit in last Wednesday with the Awana group and it was so amazing to watch our children working hard at memorizing Scripture and to see adults investing in the future mothers and fathers and leaders of our church. My prayer is that at every level in the church we would be working hard to “hide God’s word in our hearts” (Psalm 119:9- 11). I know that is easier for some of us than others. That’s why I keep presenting Scripture memory songs and making those readily available. In fact if you’ve never memorized the books of the Bible, which is one of the most powerful first steps you can take in helping you to study the Bible, there are two songs that will help you. Even better, they make it pretty easy.

There’s one for the Old Testament, and one for the New Testament. Personally I’m a little biased towards the Old Testament song, but both are catchy. Remember it’s not about whether you love the music or not, but does it help make it memorable. Both of these songs do that. Simply let these songs play in the morning as you get ready for the day. You can’t not memorize them! One of my prayers for Valley View is that we would be known as a church that is Hungry for God’s Word. We would be known as people who love God’s Word and who are deeply shaped by God’s Word. And finally, that as God’s Word transforms our hearts, we would pour into our community and influence all of PRP and Valley Station and Southwest Louisville for the gospel of Jesus Christ!
