Salt and Light
There are two phrases we often hear in our home around mealtime. One occurs after the meal, when Julie says, “I thought we’d have more left over.” The other is before the meal during the cooking, when you’ll hear her say, “It needs more salt.” Now here’s a tip to all the ambitious chili cook-off contestants: when you add salt, don’t add it in one big lump and leave it there. If you do that and the judge gets that bite, you will lose badly. Instead, like Julie, sprinkle the salt throughout and stir it in carefully so that it permeates the entire dish. With salt, a small amount goes a long way.
This week we will be looking at the passage in the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus says that His disciples are to be like salt and light. As we will see, that means a number of things, but one thing for sure is that a small number of disciples have influenced the entire world. Their actions and their efforts to tell others about Jesus have ended up spreading throughout the world. We are called to live in a way that the world notices something different about us. The way we act should point them to Jesus.
The Sermon on the Mount is all about living in the Kingdom of Heaven. The Beatitudes focused on describing who we are. This week will transition us to what we do.
