Navigating Transitions

They say that in a triathlon it’s the transitions that make or break you. That’s where you have to make sure to keep moving and not lose time when changing from swimming clothes, to bike gear, and finally into running attire. In my brief two-event triathlon career, I believed in theory that the transitions needed to be fast, but in practice, after swimming hard in freezing open water and no wetsuit, I watched everyone run past my exhausted carcass while I fought just to walk up the sandy hill to the transition zone. I was more beached whale than blazing athlete. In theory the transitions are fast. In reality this transition zone was looking like a great place to stay a while, eat some snacks, and re-evaluate my life choices.

Sunday we transitioned into a new series for the Fall, studying 1 Peter and “Finding Joy in Suffering.” Read ahead for next Sunday’s message in 1 Peter 1:3-5. The children are also gearing up to start a new school year. This past Sunday we celebrated our 5th graders moving up to join our Student Ministry this Fall. That was one of the highlights of my life, that first Wednesday night when I was able to attend the youth group, I couldn’t wait! It’s an important milestone for these kids, so please be praying for God’s hand on their lives in the coming years. The middle school years can be challenging, but they also can be key times of spiritual growth and influence. We need to assume the best for our kids in this coming season, what Paul Tripp calls, “The Age of Opportunity.”

Keep our church in your prayers as everyone gears up to restart Wednesday activities. We have an exciting lineup of D-groups, including a new recovery focused group, so you’ll want to get signed up for them here (see below for more details). We will also have an open study covering portions of the book of Mark, for those who are not in a D-group, that meets in Peercy Hall. AWANA  also begins next Wednesday, and our meals will begin again in September.

Be praying for our church to fall more in love with God’s Word every passing day, that in His Word we would see more of Jesus every time we read, and that our church would become more like Him, able to “rejoice in our sufferings” (Romans 5:1-5). As we grow in our hunger and knowledge of God’s Word, we grow in our ability to share Christ all across the South End of Louisville.
