A Monumental Breakthrough

On December 1, 1990, Englishman Graham Fagg and Frenchman Phillippe Cozette met for a monumental breakthrough. It was a breakthrough like never before. It wasn’t a breakthrough of a foreign defense, or a scientific breakthrough, but a literal breaking through solid rock. For two years prior to this date, both nations had been operating their own drilling equipment, boring a tunnel underneath the English Channel that would eventually become the “Chunnell.” Graham and Phillipe were the first to punch through the remaining layer of bedrock and shake hands. Though they were 370 feet below sea level, and started drilling over 23 miles apart, the two countries were only 14 inches off center when they met.

You can imagine the massive amount of planning, work, and effort that must have gone into the building of the tunnel. That kind of breakthrough takes an almost other-worldly effort. As I shared Sunday, I believe God is wanting to move at Valley View and break through old spiritual barriers in the lives of our community. As we opened the book of Acts to learn about the founding of the church in Philippi (Acts 16), we saw Paul and Silas launching the church from a place of prayer, walking by faith, and staying on mission even in the midst of persecution. I came away from studying that chapter with a renewed sense of urgency for our church!

Not long ago, Eddie Lee Brooks, our Senior Adult Minister, shared the following verse with the rest of the church staff:

Isaiah 43:19

      Behold, I am doing a new thing;

      now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?

      I will make a way in the wilderness

      and rivers in the desert.

She shared this verse with a sense of anticipation, that she believes God is doing a “new thing” here at Valley View. This is partly why I called us to pray this week. Pray every day for Valley View. Pray specifically that we would be a church with a renewed commitment to prayer. Prayer is what founded the Philippian church. Prayer is what started Valley View. Prayer is what has launched most major movements of the Holy Spirit, and prayer is what will make the difference at Valley View in the coming year.

So join with us and pray for our church every day this week and let’s watch God do a “new thing” at Valley View in the coming year for the sake of the gospel in the South End of Louisville!
