Persistent Prayer

Sunday evening I drove to Stanford, KY to visit with my old Student Pastor and a couple of other guys from my youth group days. We try to get together once a year or so to pray for one another and catch up on life. After sitting around a fire for a couple of hours, our Student Pastor shared ways he had been praying for each of us over the last year. There were things he had been praying for me for the last year that I had forgotten I’d even mentioned to him. He recalled things with my kids I had asked him to pray for years ago. I knew he was committed to praying for others, but his faithfulness and care was an overwhelming sign of love.

There’s something powerful about committing to pray intentionally for someone over the course of a year. That’s why I’m excited about what God will do in our church through a prayer effort Colby launched between our senior adults and students last Sunday. Each student was partnered with a senior adult who committed to pray for them over the next year. I’ve already been encouraged to hear of the connections that have been established in one Sunday across generations in our church.

Hershael York reminded us Sunday, in Luke 11, about the power of persistent prayer. The way he and Tonya faithfully prayed for and pursued their family to know Christ left me moved and inspired to do the same. We all have someone in our lives who needs that kind of persistence. Who is God calling you to put at the top of your prayer list this year? Be praying daily that they become mighty Oaks of Righteousness in 2024 and beyond! The more of a praying church we become the more we will see God move in the lives of people all across the South End of Louisville.
