About a year ago Kevin Brian, a student pastor here many years ago, stopped by to visit and brought with him twelve framed prints. These prints used to hang in the hallways flanking the sanctuary and included symbols representing some of the spiritual priorities of the church. One has in the center of the print two Greek letters overlaid on one another: Alpha and Omega. These are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. Together they represent the full scope of something, like when we say “From A to Z.” Jesus says in Revelation 22:13, “I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” He is the full scope of everything that has ever existed. He was there when everything started, and he will be there when it all ends. Nothing will escape him and nothing will surprise him. In Him we find the “summing up of all things” (Ephesians 1:10).
I hung this print where I can see it from my desk. It serves as a reminder that no matter what I may be facing on any given day, Jesus is present, He is with me, and He knows the beginning and end of all things. He is greater than whatever it is that seems overwhelming at the moment. Meditating on this truth brings so much comfort and peace. I mentioned Sunday that to know who you are, or “Know Thyself,” you have to know who He is. And to know who He is, we have to be in his Word, reading, studying, and meditating on the transcendent truths we find there.
Make it a high priority to be in God’s Word this year like never before. You can check out our church-wide reading plan here. We plan to read through the entire Bible together this year. Do what you can, because some Bible is better than no Bible. Our burden is to Grow into “Oaks of Righteousness” in 2025 so that we can take the gospel of Jesus Christ to all of the South End of Louisville!
