The best kind of will-power

In his book Atomic Habits, James Clear says the best kind of will-power is the kind you never have to use. Meaning, it’s a lot easier to resist whatever it is you’re trying to resist if you are able to avoid it all together. That’s why those who are trying to lose weight will remove all the junk food from their house. Sure, they could run out and buy more, but if it’s not there, that’s one less temptation lingering in the cupboard.

This is partly why our memory verse for February is 1 Peter 4:7, to remind us of the importance of protecting our hearts. So many have shared how much they loved the break from social media and news for a week, and how it deeply enriched their spiritual lives. Once the temptation of consuming a continuous stream of dribble was removed, many found that their hearts and minds were more naturally drawn to things of depth and significance.

1 Peter 4:7 calls us to be self-controlled and sober-minded and also gives us the reason why: “for the sake of your prayers.” It’s not just a matter of avoiding something, it’s about setting us up to be more effective at prayer – something we all want! I don’t know what kind of  limits you’ve put on yourself moving forward, but focus on memorizing 1 Peter 4:7 to help remind your heart of why it is important. We are seeking to stir up a greater hunger for prayer and for the spread of the gospel all throughout the South End of Louisville. It’s worth the effort!
