Worship as Evangelism

This week I’m attending a pastor’s retreat hosted by Bob Russell, former pastor of Southeast Christian Church. It’s been an encouraging time to learn from him and other leaders as well as connecting with a few other pastors from neighboring states. This is just another way Bob has invested in Valley View. Years ago Bob worked with Joel, the pastor at the time, to help establish and launch our Elders.

One of the things Bob said that resonated with me is the incredible power of a worship service where God is encountered. Everyone wants to encounter God at church, that’s why we come. And when we do encounter God, when we experience His presence, we want others to know and experience that too. In fact, Bob makes the point that a worship service filled with the awe and joy of God’s presence is one of the most powerful evangelistic tools the church has today. Where else can one encounter the presence of God in such a powerful and tangible way? Even a pre-Christian (a friend of mine says that instead of ‘non-Christian’ – I love it) can sense that something powerful is at work in a worship service where God is moving.

Easter

Easter is approaching; it’s less than two weeks away. Maybe there’s someone you’ve been praying for, someone you believe is open to hearing from God. Consider inviting them to our Easter service this year. You never know how seeing hundreds of others worshiping Jesus might soften their hearts to hearing from God.

We plan to have cinnamon rolls again this year, so come early (doors open at 10AM) and enjoy visiting. Also be aware there are no life groups on Easter morning. Preschool classes will be offered during the service.

We wrapped up John chapter 19 last Sunday, and this week we’ll study the first half of the resurrection story, John 20:1-18. When we come together to study God’s Word, we come to worship in spirit and truth, like John 4:23 says, “true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him.” The Father is seeking true worshipers, and I know Valley View is hungry for others to come join us in worship: our neighbors, classmates, family, and friends. May God grant you favor as you seek to pour out Christ’s love all across Southwest Louisville!
