Ancient Wisdom is Always Available
One of the things that is important when stepping into a new task is having access to a trusted mentor. When I first stepped into a leadership role in ministry, I was connected with a trusted mentor who could help me along the way. He had been successful in business, leading a large electronics company with over 7,000 people working for him at one point. Needless to say, he had lots of experience with people. One of the first things he said to me as my mentor was, “If you ever need anything, you call me. That’s what I’m here for. Don’t even hesitate.” It was hard to believe that a guy this successful and full of wisdom was so eager to help me with problems I faced that were probably trivial to him. But true to his word, he was always available to help me navigate a challenge and always had wise insight into the situation that seemed unsolvable to me. And even though I’ve since left the ministry where he was my official mentor, he still is eager to answer my calls and offer advice and wisdom.
We’ve been keeping ourselves saturated in the book of Proverbs over the last few months. We’ve called the series “Ancient Wisdom for a Modern Age.” Last Sunday we looked at what Proverbs says about the heart. Though we have just one week remaining before we turn to a book of the New Testament, wisdom has not suddenly become inaccessible. In fact, many Christians follow the practice of reading a Proverb every day. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs, one for every day of the month. I think this is one of the easiest and most practical ways to get back into reading the Bible regularly if you’ve allowed the habit to slip. Simply pick up your Bible, and whatever day of the month it is, turn to that chapter number, and read for five minutes.
In fact I want to encourage our entire church to do this for the coming month. I think there will be great fruit in following up our series by marinating a bit longer in Proverbs. Though we are shifting our Sunday morning attention back to the New Testament, Ancient Wisdom is not going away, it’s always at our finger tips.
Join us this Sunday as we wrap up Proverbs by looking at the last chapter, Proverbs 31. This is a famous chapter primarily for the section on the “Excellent Wife.” We are also going to look at an interesting connection within the chapter that is often overlooked. Our hope at Valley View is to rightly handle the “Word of Truth,” as our memory verse for August reminds us
(2 Timothy 2:15). Valley View is a Bible-Believing, Gospel-Centered church, passionate about worshiping and exalting Jesus Christ in all we do. Our prayer is that families all over Southwest Louisville would come to know Jesus because of Valley View. Pray for one person you know this week to come join us for church this Sunday!
