He Who Began a Good Work in You

The verse I have been meditating on this week is Philippians 1:6 “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus” (NASB). What good work does Christ want to do in your life this year and in the life of Valley View this year? I know He began many good works in 2022 and I believe He is faithful and will bring about even greater works in this coming year.

In last week’s update I listed some of the exciting things we have planned to launch the year. Things like the Bible reading plan, our upcoming series on “How to know God’s will” (thank you Andrew for kicking us off this past Sunday), and our Wednesday night D groups. All of these are some of the ways we come to know and understand what God wants to do in our lives. Particularly, being in His Word. I’ve noticed in my life that when I am in the Word, the Word tends to show up. Meaning, I’m more likely to be looking for God to speak and expecting Him to speak and direct my life when I’m in His Word.

In 2022 we read through the Bible together as a church. It’s a powerful step to take to understand the big picture of the Bible. The challenge though, with reading through the entire Bible in a year, is that there’s not enough time to pause and reflect and contemplate more deeply on passages. That’s why this year we’re dialing back the volume and focusing on the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs. Both approaches are important, to consume broadly, but also to reflect deeply, and I hope this year’s reading plan will help us to develop the second half of that habit.

I’m looking forward to gathering with you this Sunday and kicking off our three-part series on how to know God’s will. I am basing the series on the little book by Wayne Grudem of the same name. If you’d like a copy of the book, the church can order them in bulk at about $6 each. We will have a sign-up sheet Sunday.

I’m praying God gives you wisdom in all that you do this week as He launches you into a new year and into a new season of seeing Him work in your family, in your neighborhood, at Valley View, and in all of Southwest Louisville!
